Congratulations! You have made the decision to accept another
job offer...what now? Remember -- you may be leaving, but you don't
want to burn any bridges along the way.
Make
sure you have a firm commitment from your new employer before you
resign. When
your position is confirmed, follow these guidelines to resign from
your present employer:
- Give
reasonable notice to your employer, stating the exact date you will
be exiting.
- Talk
to your supervisor late in the day to avoid a counter-offer
response that day.
- Always
thank your supervisor for the opportunity to work with him/her at
this company.
- Notify
Human Resources/Personnel with a resignation
letter giving your final date of employment. Mention that it
was pleasurable working at this company and that you appreciate
the experience and/or knowledge you acquired while there.
-
If asked why you are leaving, briefly explain your new opportunity.
Never mention money or any specific problems you had while working
there; there may be another opening one day for which you'll want
to return.
Following
these guidelines will leave them with a positive impression.
